“Where I’m From”

By Marty Coffin Evans © 2021

I’m from snow covered fields

Viewed from my back window ledge

Watching as the silent farm lands

Stretch for miles beyond my sight.

Riding through small towns

Christmas lights twinkle

Adorning silent town squares

All add to the anticipation of seeing

Grandma June in Bloomingdale, Indiana.

Christmas joy and laughter shared with

Cousins Anne and Chuck, Aunt Lucile and Uncle Jay.

Playing “Pit” evokes shouts of “Oats” and “Rye”

Driving our grandmother to her bedroom

Seeking silence until our bedlam subsides.

Summer visits to Lake Webster

Paddle boating, lunch or dinner on the pontoon

Juicy ripe tomatoes and fresh corn on the cob

Add to the delight of Aunt Lucile’s Persimmon Pudding.

Turkey Run State Park with trails and suspension bridges

Bring laughter and delight to children and adults

Covered Bridges span streams throughout Parke County

Fried mushrooms consumed in the Inn

Welcome our visits to the Hoosier state

Visiting cousin’s Levi and Catharine Coffin’s home

Transports us to days gone by

Hidden buckboard and bedroom compartments

Educate about their Underground Railroad Station.

Memories wrapped in ribbon from childhood days

Remain unbroken across the years

Capturing the joys and experiences shared with family

Always treasured from my second home – Indiana.
